About the Story:
When David asks, “What do you think children need to hear right now?” Julie explains the benefits of children knowing that actions have consequences. As first-graders enter into a school world that is new and frustrating, it is important for them to know that how you show up matters. Even when we are offering grace to one another in difficult times, it is important for you to show up and try your best. By showing up, you help not only yourself, but you also encourage and inspire those around you.
In the story Julie and David create together, we meet Mister Key-Wand, a top-hat wearing hedgehog, former actor turned first-grade teacher. Mister Key-Wand thinks he is ready for the first day of school but those rambunctious forest kids won’t settle down. Upstaged on the very first day, Mister Key-Wand surprises everyone (including himself) and embodies the message that our choices have consequences. (Through the magic of story development, Mister Key-Wand becomes Miss Key-Wand in the final Sparkle Story.) Ultimately, Miss Key-Wand models her ability to determine her experiences through her own choices.
